Em Dash vs En Dash vs Hyphen
The difference between the em dash, en dash and hyphen, when to use each, and how to type them on Mac and Windows.

The hyphen (-)
The hyphen glues words into a single idea. Use it for compound modifiers before a noun (a well-known writer, but the writer is well known), for spelled-out numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine, and for prefixes where the join would otherwise be unreadable (re-elect, co-worker).
The hyphen is the only one of the three on a standard keyboard, which is exactly why the other two get misused.
The en dash (–)
The en dash means "to" or "through". It connects endpoints:
- Number ranges: pages 10–20, 1939–1945
- Date and time spans: Monday–Friday, 9:00–17:00
- Directional pairs: the London–Paris route, a 3–1 win
- Compounds where one side is already two words: post–Cold War
One rule people forget: do not mix the en dash with "from" or "between". Write from 1939 to 1945 or 1939–1945, never from 1939–1945.
The em dash (—)
The em dash interrupts. It is the most flexible mark in English and can stand in for a comma, a colon or a pair of parentheses, always with more force than the mark it replaces.
- Instead of parentheses, when you want the aside emphasised rather than hidden: The budget — all £4m of it — vanished.
- Instead of a colon, to land a conclusion: There was only one explanation — he had never read it.
- Instead of a comma, to mark an abrupt turn: She was going to explain — then the line went dead.
Spaces around the em dash?
Style, not grammar. The Chicago Manual of Style and most American publishers set it closed up (word—word). AP style, most British publishers and nearly all web writing use spaces (word — word). Pick one and hold it; spaced dashes are generally easier to read on screen.
Em dash vs semicolon
Both join two independent clauses. The semicolon says the halves are balanced and related; the em dash says the second half lands on the first. The deadline moved; the budget did not. is even-handed. The deadline moved — the budget did not. has a punchline.

Why this matters for AI text
Language models overuse the em dash badly — several per paragraph where a human writer manages a few per page. It has become the most reliable stylistic tell of machine-written prose, ahead of vocabulary. If you are editing AI output, the em dash count is the first thing to check and the fastest thing to fix with an em dash remover.
